Institute of Advanced Motorists
The
Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is a road safety charity founded
in 1956.
Its
main objective is to encourage drivers to make a positive contribution
to Road Safety by raising their skills to advanced standards based on
techniques developed by Police Driving Schools throughout the UK.
Membership is attained by passing the Institute's Advanced Driving Test.
Examiners are all holders of a Police Advanced Driving Qualification which
is recognised internationally as representing driving excellence,
To date over 360,000 drivers and motorcycle riders have taken the IAM
test; more than 10,000 tests are conducted every year and the current
membership stands at over 108,000
Studies of accident rates carried out by the Governments Transport Research
Laboratory show that advanced drivers not only cause fewer accidents,
but also have the skill to avoid many of those caused by others. This is
something which is being reflected in premiums quoted for advanced motorists
and motorcyclists by an increasing number of insurance companies.
