Frequently Asked Questions

What do I get for my money?

The answer is - an awful lot.

The cost of joining the Group is £85.00 - made up of the following:-

Cost of taking the test - £35

First years membership of the IAM after passing the test - £18
*As many observed runs as required in preparation for the test. *

The IAM book "How to be an Advanced Driver".

The ability to attend All Group activities.

Administration costs.

How long will it take?

Runs are usually taken once a week, mutually agreed between the Associate and Observer, and last between one to one and a half hours, covering appoximately thirty-five miles.
The number of runs required will depend on the enthusiasm of the Associate and how much effort he or she is prepared to put in. Usually, it is expected that the Associate would be ready to take the test in approximately three months.

How long will I have to wait for an Observer?

This will depend on your location but usually we hope to allocate within three months of joining. However, there are areas of Norfolk in which we have a limited number of Observers so Associates have to wait for an Observer to become available in their area or be prepared to travel.
Be assured that our Associate co-ordinator will allocate Associates as soon as possible.

Is there an age limit?

There is no age limit for people wanting to take the IAM Advanced Driving Test. However, we do recommend that young drivers get some experience before considering taking the test to give them a better chance of success.
We suggest that they take one of our
'Young Driver Courses'
which will give them an idea of what is expected.
There is no upper age limit but prospective Associates should bear in mind that this is an ADVANCED DRIVING test and they would be expected to maintain a high standard of driving and keep up to the speed of the road where it is safe to do so.

What if I have points on my licence?

Should you have points on your licence it does not necessarily mean you cannot apply to take the advanced driving test. Although not desirable, having up to six points on your licence will mean that you can still take it. Any more than this and you would have to wait until the excess had expired. After all, the whole point of taking your advanced driving test is to improve your driving.
