- Question 134.2b
This time it's giving way to the right person.
A colleague popped in to see me at work the other day - caught me having a nap on my desk (well almost).
"I have a driving question for you...." he said.
Not that I mind. But it seems that more and more people at work come to me with their driving experiences and want advise from me. I sincerely hope I'm not the only one sitting in this boat and that many of my 'readers' experience the same 'can I ask a driving related questions...'
Anyway. He was driving down Costessey Lane heading towards Drayton. When he reached the A1067 (Fakenham Road) he had to stop and give way for traffic driving up and down the Fakenham Road. Simples.
However, he wanted to cross over the Fakenham road and continue down School Road. Again should be simples.
But hey. There's some strange road markings on this junction. It seems that you can "go half way" across and wait at another Give Way sign half way across the road. Again this doesn't really take too much brain power. Should be simples (if you don't have a trailer!).
But to make things even more complicated the council have placed another Give Way (turning lane) for people coming from the City down the Fakenham Road and wanted to turn right into School Road.
His question to me was...... "Who has right of way?"
The car "on the left" should go first because:
a) He gets to go first as his way is free first (traffic flows past him first)
b) Should go first as he may have arrived in the box first.
The car "on the right" thinks he should go first because:
a) he is "on the right" and you must give way to vehicles from the right
b) he was "on the main" first and you must give way to those on the main road
c) He may have arrived first.
Truth is:
Both cars are now on the main road so neither is giving way to those on the major road.
Both cars must give way to those heading into the city on the Fakenham Road.
The car on the left could go first in heavy traffic if a car leaves a gap "only for him"
Equally the car on the right could go first if a gap is left "only for him"
Comments please?
My answer to him was to use common sense and "give way to people on your right"
What would you do?
