- MISSING RANT
I was talking to a few people in the office the other day about white lines. Particularly the white lines that make up the triangle between the motorway/dual carriageway and the merging slip road (the one on your right as you join, or left if you are not).
Did you know that the entrances to Dual Carriageways sometimes have dashed white lines on these triangles and on Motorways they are solid?
I have it on authority from a friendly police Class 1 that it is an offence to travel over the solid white lines on a motorway junction (slip road) but as the white lines on most Dual Carriageways are dashed - it is not an offence here.
This is something I have known about for many years but it seems that nobody in the office agrees with me.
Question is - why are people not aware?
Oh and um - apologies for the missing rant in last months Torque.
- ENGLAND FLAGS - Legal?
Just in case you don't know what I'm talking about - let me give you some background knowledge...
It was the summer of 2006 and England were playing football (a game with 22 men kicking a spherical object around an area of grass) in the world cup (a competition where the best football teams in the world compete for a golden trophy).
"World Cup Fever" breaks out like the plaque and spreads across the land. The England flags appear in the strangest of positions and situations.
Questions is - are you concerned about them?
In Wiltshire it was ruled that flying an England Flag in your car was racist.
Manchester City Council banned their refuge workers from flying the flag in their lorries due to Health & Safety.
The RAC had previously released a "Flag Flying Charter" with advice for motorists.
BMF Spokesman Jeff Stone said: "We don't want to be seen as party poopers but a wayward flag hitting a motorcyclist in the face could be a serious own goal."
The RAC Foundation pointed out any driver whose flag falls from their car could face prosecution under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Act 1986
In Hampshire, police received reports from horse owners saying flapping flags were startling their animals.
Taxi drivers in Nottinghamshire had been banned from flying flags from their passenger windows amid fears they could injure passengers
Cheltenham Borough Council originally banned its cabbies from flying flags for safety reasons
A Wearside man who covered the front of his house with England flags was told by his housing association to take some down
A police spokesperson was quoted recently as saying:
"Police officers apply the law in a professional, proportionate and considered fashion. An offence may be committed if a driver's view is obstructed by an object. Additionally, an offence may be committed if something attached to a vehicle causes danger or nuisance to any person. An officer may choose to take further action if the individual set of circumstances make that necessary."
So are you going to fly yours with pride?
Come on England!
